Self-publishers who do an ebook as a substitute for physical coffee table books are making a big mistake. They are certainly mot getting better construction or a beautiful book.
Folks, why do they call them coffee table books? Because they are meant to be a beautiful book to rest on a coffee table in your home or office! They are meant to admire for their beauty, and pleasurably read for their content. If books are not demonstrate quality, are beautifully printed and securely bound, then they are surely a disappointment.
However, a novel is another story, but …
I do think ebooks are wonderful for novels. But, you don’t place novels on your coffee table for guests to admire or browse through either! If everyone thought ebooks were the only way to go, we would no longer have print. That is not the case.
Readers still love the touch and feel of a book in their hands. They appreciate beautiful books with custom options.
Don’t forget that when you have a greater demand for your ebook, you should consider printing a minimum run of 1,000 copies. As you print more copies in one run, the cost per copy goes down, and the profit you make increases. Make more profit per copy.

Print on-demand services are not set up to do hardcover bindings well. They are almost always side sewn, and we frequently have POD books presented to us by self-publishers, with pages falling out. They biggest mistake of all is to invest time and money in a book that ultimately is poorly bound and with smudge printing, and inaccurate color.
