Favorite Book Resources
Our basic favorites for self-publishing resources.
Book resources.
Outside book resources are gathered here to aid authors and self- publishers. There are many websites and links to great services that are available online. The sites or links listed here are those that we have found useful. And they are some of our favorite links for self-publishing authors. See this resource page for more in-depth information.
InDesign templates.
We also have free InDesign templates to use as book resources on Star Print Brokers. Feel free to download them instantly. Use as many kinds or sizes of templates as you wish. The sizes can be modified. Remember, all of our printing is custom, so you do not have to adhere to a standard size. We have no standard sizes as all of our book printing is custom. However, before you dive into book sign, get a quote. Sometimes a small change in book size can impact the cost of printing.
We include links on this page for all sorts of self-publishing resources. If you do not want to design your own book, we do offer design services. Check out our book design quote page.
Selecting typefaces.
Be careful when selecting fonts to use for print. We really like ‘O’ or Open typefaces best for print. Make sure that you invest in a classic, well-structures typeface for the book’s text. Many of the quirky and fun typefaces you might use on a websites are not made for print. You could experience some unexpected results. There is more on this subject and other subject related to self-publishing. Nancy Starkman wrote Book Design: Simple & Professional which is available on Amazon,
Creating a website.
We like WordPress for websites (not hosting at WordPress.com,) but built on Kadence Framework. We love the Restored316 child themes for Kadence framework. It was difficult getting started, but both Kadence and Restored316 are very helpful.
If you website is simply your calling card and you are not interested necessarily in driving traffic to your site, Wix.com would be a good solution.
Previously, we used Genesis framework to build our site. StudioPress has a great Author template. But, if you want to use another child theme for WordPress, as an author you might like to the Author Pro plugin.
