Self-Publisher Tutorials
… for Authors and Self-Publishers.
Find our tutorials category in our blog.
A book is a different beast altogether than a brochure, newsletter, etc. If this is your first book, it is a good idea to read though our guides. We try to write about the things that seem to present the biggest challenges. At times, we do add to the list, so check back if you don’t see the answer to your question. Also, use the search on our site. See our proof approval form
Even the most savvy of graphic artists and even book designers may need a little help when laying out their first book to print on offset press.
Star Print Brokers does not give InDesign lessons. Before contacting us for help, please see if you can find the answer to your question among the tutorial posts.
Although we don’t give lessons, if you are printing a book with us, we can certainly answer your questions and maybe provide suggestions. Check out this resource page. Learn about our process. Self-publisher tutorials can all be found in the Tutorials category.
Self-publisher tutorials are so helpful if you are new to book design and printing books!
There is a lot of valuable information in self-publisher tutorials. The tutorials are for authors, book designers, graphic artists, photographers, and any author or publisher.
You can troubleshoot InDesign files with the guides. You can also learn more about book printing and file preparation. Learn more in our how-to guides for Star Print Brokers clients to prepare and send files to us.
There are few schools that teach book design. Nancy Starkman wrote “Book Design: Simple & Professional.” She includes decades of book design how-to information into her new book. Get a copy!
One of the common or confusing problems for the new book designer is to understand the cover wrap on a hardcover book. It is not a dust jacket. It is the paper that prints with text and images or cloth that glues to the boards.
Another tip …
Here is another self-publisher tutorials tip. Remember, when the interior text pages are complete and the page count and the paper thickness is decided, we will provide a measurement guide for your book only. The author or designer will be given the measurements needed in order to finalize the files.
The measurements are dependent on the type of binding, page count, and thickness of the paper. Since we allow self-publishers so many options, you can see when we provide measurements for just the book to print.
