Online book printing can mean different things to different self-publishers. What does book printing online mean to you as a self-publisher? Is it printing on-demand, printing on press, short-run printing, or creating an ebook without printing the physical book? Not everyone is looking for the same thing. Let’s take a look at it.

Online book printing possibilities:
Printing on press.
This is what we do at Star Print Brokers. We’re printing on press with real ink on premium paper. We’re also professionally binding books and books are always of premium quality. We provide high quality books, and also books with custom options that you can’t find at most printers. Our minimum is 1,000 hardcover, or 2,000 soft cover books.
Print on-demand.
This is printing a handful of books at a time. The books are output from a digital output device – no printing on press. The device is better than desktop copiers, but works something like a copier. Most often, toner transfers to commodity paper stock. Rub a finger over it and the toner smears. If your book is black and white or has a little color, POD is not a bad way to go. It is just not the means that you would use to print photography books. The hardcover binding is by no means as fine as the binding methods we use, and they are expensive.
Distribution.
If you use an on-demand service, do you actually get your book into brick-and-mortar bookstores, or just have access to those bookstores? We have a secret for you. If you have your own ISBN and barcode, you already have access to brick-and-mortar bookstores. You are in the database already.
Short-run printing.
This term can apply to both print on-demand as well as printing on press. This means that books are printed in quantities of 500 or maybe even 300. The cost per copy, or unit cost, is higher than for longer press runs. If digitally output, print on-demand, short-run printing works well for soft cover books that are black and white. Hardcover books are much more costly. We occasionally do short-run print on-demand on press, and in the USA only.
Ebooks.
You can create an ebook without printing the physical book. Some folks might refer to this as online book printing, but there is no printing involved. We also do fixed-layout ebooks.
