From the Jacket:
I met Mick about fifteen years or so ago at a New Years’ Eve celebration near Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Immediately impressive for his lively repartee and twinkling wit, I vowed to meet him on his own turf and a few days later went to see him on his farm.
I had heard he was a “bit of an artist” and after a couple of cold beers on the stoep he invited me inside his house to look at some of his paintings. Here was one of those jaw-dropping moments, as I discovered the sheer energy, creativity and laughter in his work. Huge expansive canvasses that simply burst with life. His love of Africa, the African people and his mischievous sense of humour – this was a recipe that really worked.
Continuing …
I’ve been delighted to know Mick ever since and make a point of visiting him on his farm at least once a year. Ever since the idea occurred to produce an entertaining book that would reflect some of his creativity, I have been badgering Mick to let me off the leash. I am proud, and indeed honoured that he has allowed me to publish this record of his work.

MICHAEL J. ALLARD
For the hundreds of thousands of years that man has walked our planet he has felt the desire to express himself through art. From the rock paintings of animals that prehistoric man saw to the brightly coloured glimpses of life that inspire our impressionists, the need for artists to express themselves is a common theme.
Occasionally there is born an artist that stands out. Perhaps through raw talent, and perhaps through an ability to capture a fleeting moment that is lost in the blink of an eye. And then just perhaps, as in the case of Michael “Mick” Allard, through humour.
Please read on:
Born with a mischievous glint in his eye and an enviable sense of creativity that has been honed by a varied and colourful life both in Europe and Africa. Mick has achieved great success as a talented and highly proficient artist. What makes him different, and the object of much respect by his ardent fans. Humour is woven into so much of his work.
His paintings have been sold throughout the world. They rarely, if ever appear on the open market; proud owners covet their ‘Allards’ and would not part with them for a kings ransom. Here then, in “A Lighter Side of Africa” is an opportunity to share the enthusiasm for his work. Enjoy the sheer zest for life that is Michael J. Allard.
