Custom book printing mean that you have many more options than with on-demand printing. We offer options that the self published author cannot get on their own. Plus, we have lots of ideas — and no sales pressure!
Basic option examples of custom book printing for the self-published book.
Typeset the book title on the spine.
Often POD providers often set the title in plain block letters on the spine. Authors usually cannot use their title design. You or your designer can include your unique typography title image or typesetting on the spine, and this is just one of the many options you get with custom book printing.
Yes, you can have landscape-orientation.
Using landscape- or portrait-orientation seldom makes a difference to us. Some dimensions are not possible at any bindery. Sometimes authors want a very wide landscape- orientation book. If the book is too wide, we cannot bind it and maintain the structural integrity because we won’t allow the book to “torque.” We can create large format books, but sometimes they have to be bound by hand. That increases the cost.

Have you seen those huge books by world-famous photographer, Annie Leibovitz? If you are a major publisher and know for certain that the book will sell many thousands of copies, then the printer will customize their binding equipment to accommodate an over-sized book such as this. We do not offer books bound in that size, nor does anyone else that we know of, but over our many years in business, we have been asked this question a number of times!
Terminology – the width is called out first:
Examples:
A wide, or landscape-orientation book is wider than it is tall, maximum 11.8″ wide. You would say a book is 11″ x 8.5″ , not 8.5″ x 11″.
A tall, or portrait-orientation book is taller than it is wide, maximum 13″ tall. You would say a book is 8.5″ x 11″ , not 11″ x 8.5″.
Square books that are 11.8″ wide by 11.8″ or taller, are frequently custom manufactured with us at Star Print Brokers. Send us your requests and we will discuss and we are quite communicative and knowledgeable! Most option requests are indeed possible for the custom book printing that we offer.
Print a permanent adhesive “sticker” image to place on your cloth hardcover book.
Here is our process …
- We can bind your books with a cover wrap (this is NOT a dust jacket) that is cloth, leather, paper, and even a faux material like vegan leather.
- We can then print a permanent adhesive sticker and coat it with UV varnish.
- Then we burnish, or stamp the area where it will be seen on the cover. We do this at the same time we stamp the cover.
- The book cover usually has a blind stamp or a foil stamp.
- The stickers are done by hand. Yes, they are actually put on the covers by a person. The cover is gorgeous!
Print on your books’ endpapers.
The endpapers of a properly printed book on press, are not single page endpapers. They are twice the width of a page.
For instance, if your page size is 8″ x 10″, the endpapers will physically be 16″ x 10″. Endpapers in POD books are usually one page, 8″ x 10″ in this example. They glue to the inside front and back covers.
At Star Print Brokers, we can print images on ends, or any design you wish. We can also print just one PMS ink. You can print on one side of the sheet or both sides.
Using our example, each endpaper for the front and back inside covers would be 16″ x 10″. However, it is crucial to point out that the Adobe InDesign file need to be setup in single pages. In this example, that is 8″ x 10″, not 16″ x 10″.
