Quark vs InDesign … are you still using Quark?
The Quark vs InDesign discussion need to lead off withe the fact that Quark was acquired a number of years ago by a private equity firm. The article in TechCrunch.com, “30-Year Old Publishing Software Maker Quark Acquired by Private Equity Firm”. We wondered at the time, what will be its future? Will a new company acquire Quark and revitalize it into something new and improved? Could it become better than InDesign for book layout and design? The questions went unanswered several years ago. But in 2022, the answer is very clear. Use InDesign.
I’ve used both Adobe InDesign (starting with Aldus PageMaker, so many years ago) and Quark.
My experience in using Adobe InDesign.
I’ve been designing books and other materials for decades, and find InDesign to be far superior when it comes to building a book. Most of the files submitted to us for book printing are created in InDesign, so judging from our corner of the world, InDesign remains the number one choice.
A number of years ago I wrote that it will be interesting to learn what will ultimately happen the brand. It was once quite a powerhouse, and I am sure many people still use it. Will it be supported in the short-term? We feel we have to keep an open mind, and see if this brand we revitalized under new ownership. We are not seeing Quark used for extensive book layout. It is still good for single pages, but if you are going to create an entire book, Quark is not a substitute for InDesign, in my opinion.
I wrote the book, “Book Design: Simple & Professional.” I designed it in Adobe InDesign for InDesign users. But, it’s not a book abut how to use InDesign, so it can be of interest to those not using InDesign.Nancy Starkman
Books, books, books, and more.
With InDesign, you can create a book, and then drop chapters or separate documents into it. This is very helpful if you have a lot of high-resolution images. Chapters are easier to work with in terms of the size of the file. If you are writing a novel with few or no images, Microsoft Word still works very well.
InDesign gives you a choice of what you can create. I choose a “book’.” I always have “front matter” and choose lowercase Roman numerals for the numbering. Then, I create a chapter or first section document to add to the book. The numbering is in standard Arabic numbers, starting with page ‘1’. Page one is always a right-hand page. Confusing? We also design books, so if you don’t feel comfortable setting up your book, please request a book design quote.
Star Print Brokers conclusion about Adobe InDesign vs Quark.
Our advice is simple. Without any reservation or doubt, switch to InDesign if you haven’t already! We’re approaching 2022, and now more than ever, InDesign remains the choice for book layout and design. We no longer accept files in Quark, but we of course will still accept a PDF for book printing that is made from Quark files.
